Google Launches Operating System for Netbooks – Chrome OS
Posted on 08 July 2009 by admin
NetbookReview UK got the scoop on a new project at Google called Chrome OS. Chrome OS will be a new project by Google to build an operating system specifically for Netbooks. Notably, it’s a separate project from Android – an operating system already running on some smartphones and netbooks alike.
The official Google Blog states:
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.
We see this as a great sign for the longevity of netbooks. The new Chrome OS will have support for x86 based netbooks (Intel, AMD, Nvidia) as wel as ARM powered netbooks. Google is working with OEM manufacturers to ship the Chrome OS as standard on new netbooks starting in 2010.
